As part of a ongoing series in the McDaniel Free Press, we will profile two interesting student-athletes; their lives on and off the field, their hobbies, and their interests. This issue we feature baseball player Brent Toms and volleyball player Katie Ferguson.

Ferguson is from Dover, PA and is a sophomore. In high school she played volleyball, basketball, and softball all for four years. She was all-district in softball, and team captain for volleyball and softball for two years. She is a distant relative of NFL Hall of Famer Jack Lambert and has Cherokee blood in her.
DI Bucknell as well as Lycoming and Shippensburg informally offered her scholarships for volleyball and softball but she decided on McDaniel because it was only an hour from her house and she already knew people who went here. She majors in History and Political Science at McDaniel.

“I liked the colors,” said Ferguson.

Ferguson considers her most memorable athletic moment to be the road to the states with her softball team, where they finished third. Her most embarrassing moment also occurred on the softball field, during a tournament. She tore her shorts, and then had them fall down when she hit a home run and was rounding the bases.

“I got a home run because people were laughing at my butt,” said Ferguson, “People stared a lot at my butt that day.”
Her favorite activities include hiking, kayaking, and camping. Ferguson would describe herself as a very “outdoorsy” person.
“I’m trying to learn how to shoot a gun, whoever wants to teach me,” said Ferguson.

Indoors she enjoys board games and watching her favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Other television programs she enjoys are The Office and Family Guy and likes watching any movies that fall into the category of funny, romantic, or action. Her music tastes include country, hip hop, and classic rock. She is also a member of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority.

Ferguson enjoys being an aunt to her 2-year old nephew and 9-month old niece. She works at the Boys and Girls Club of Westminster in her spare time, and has worked as the McDaniel Wrestling Team Manager for the last two seasons. She also had this to say.
“If you gentlemen are curious, flowers are the way to my heart,” said Ferguson.
