Carnival to Communicate Cautious Coition

People came out, had fun with condoms, and learned how they can Give A Shit about their sexual health on Monday, April 25 when G.A.S. hosted a “Condom Carnival” in Red Square from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

McDaniel’s G.A.S. (GIVE A SHIT) is a campus group that promotes safe sex. Their Facebook page description states, “Give A Shit about your sexual health and the sexual health of your peers! Talk. Get tested. Use protection… we’ve heard many times over that the only truly safe sex is no sex. But… we can give a shit, take care of ourselves and partners, and hopefully make a difference.”

By hosting this “Condom Carnival,” G.A.S. hoped to enlighten the McDaniel community with some of the dangers of sex without taking some of the proper precautions. The group created a few “Condom Carnival” activities to make this important, yet awkward, topic fun and informative for students and passerby. According to junior Nick Hogan, “This was a great way to inform students of the importance of safe sex; it was weird, but pretty darn fun.”

Some of the activities included, “pin the condom on the penis,” “taste testing,” and “guess how many condoms are in the jar.” Senior G.A.S. member Deane Mellor said, “No one wanted to try the pin the condom on the penis game, but there were a lot of taste testers, and a bunch of people guessed how many condoms were in the jar.”

This was not the first event G.A.S has hosted. During Spring Fling 2011 they had a booth, where they gave away condoms, brochures, stickers, and G.A.S. business cards.

Students walked away from the “Condom Carnival” with knowledge, prizes, and give-aways from gift cards to free condoms. All in all, the “Condom Carnival” was a great success and was a fun way to get students thinking and talking about safe sex. Sophomore Jan Woolley said, “I can’t wait until the next G.A.S. event!”
