Inflation has not spared college athletics, and McDaniel College programs are feeling the effects. Over the past three years, rising costs for equipment, officials, food and facilities have placed increased strain on athletic budgets, according to McDaniel coaches.
While fans often focus on game-day performances, much of the financial impact of inflation occurs behind the scenes. Travels days, matches and meets frequently require schools to provide meals for athletes and staff—an expense that has steadily increased.
“We are getting the same amount of money, but food prices have gone up,” said Steve Corrieri, head coach of McDaniel College’s men’s soccer team. Although team budgets remain unchanged, higher food costs mean the same funds now cover fewer meals. “It’s all a result of inflation,” Corrieri said.
The rising cost of officials has also placed pressure on athletic budgets. “The cost for referees has gone up within the past couple of years,” said Jenn Feldmann, head coach of McDaniel’s women’s volleyball team.
Team funds are responsible for covering officiating fees, which are often overlooked when considering athletic expenses. Equipment replacement is another growing challenge.
“Shoes can last a maximum of two seasons, depending on the wear,” Feldmann said, emphasizing the recurring cost of maintaining safe and functional gear for athletes.
Equipment prices have risen across multiple sports, including uniforms and shoes. Corrieri noted an increase in the price of jerseys, a concern echoed by Feldmann.
Both coaches agreed that the most significant effects of inflation began within the last three years. The rising costs have been particularly challenging for Division III programs, which typically operate with smaller budgets than Division I schools.
