A Beginner’s Guide to Westminster

Let me guess—you think there’s nothing to do here in Westminster because you saw more farms than gas stations on your way to McDaniel.  Well, I’m here to tell you you’re wrong.  There are a lot of fun things to do here, and they’re only a short walk away from the Hill.

Here are six great things you can do in Westminster:

Harry’s Main Street Grill

Only five minutes down Main Street you’ll find one of Westminster’s best restaurants.  It’s been around for over 25 years and has become engrained into the community with great American food and service.  They also do carry-out and delivery and are a great way to spend an afternoon or evening instead of getting fast-food again.

Carroll County Arts Council

Located just a few blocks down Main Street is Westminster’s hotspot for culture and entertainment.  It contains a huge theatre that seats 263 people and holds concerts and film screenings, art classrooms, and an awesome gallery.  On August 24th the theatre is showing Hugo, and on September 14th it’s showing Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.  Also, The National Players will be performing the classic Shakespeare play Romeo & Juliet on September 29.  However, the special Halloween showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show is the most popular event.

Gotham Comics

Further down Main Street, you’ll find Westminster’s comic book store.  Whether it’s coming for Free Comic Book Day, participating in one of the store’s awesome card/rpg tournaments, or just browsing the store’s huge selection of graphic novels, Gotham Comics is worth the short walk.  If you’re just getting into comics, don’t fret because Gotham’s employees are experts at recommending first buys.

CUP Tea Bar

Right next to Gotham Comics is one of Westminster’s best and newest additions to Main Street.  With a huge variety of tea choices, breakfast, grilled sandwiches, salads, and soups, it’s a great place to come and relax between classes or on the weekend.  Saturday is an especially great time to stop by because from 12 to 2 PM live acoustic music is played while you eat or drink tea!

Carroll County Public Library

Just a few more steps from Gotham Comics down Main Street, you’ll find the second-best library in Westminster.  Of course, nothing can beat McDaniel’s very own Hoover Library, but sometimes you might need a change in scenery to study or have trouble finding a certain book at Hoover.  It’s open till 8:45 PM from Monday to Thursday and till 5 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Baugher’s

It’s the best way to experience the country side of Westminster and it’s only a short walk down West Main Street past the stadium.  Baugher’s Restaurant has the best choices for country meals like homemade mashed potatoes and it’s the best place to get ice cream!  The bakery is famous for its 20 pie varieties.  The Fruit Market that sits just outside has awesome fresh fruits and vegetables to protect you from the Freshmen 15!  Baugher’s is the best way to support local farms and if you’re able to get a ride, it also has its own orchards where you can pick your own fruit and vegetables and a fun Petting Zoo.
